Restoration Construction
The mansion at Eastover is a relic of "Gilded Age" that reached its peak in the 1890's and early 1900's. By the time New York stockbroker Harris Fahnestock built Eastover in 1910, there were 93 Gilded Age "cottages" in the Berkshires. Most have disappeared; or had been destroyed by Berkshire weather. Only a few remain, most of which had been turned into private schools or resorts after the Great Depression.
Eastover has been part of very elegant celebrations and country style reunions for over 70 years. Eastover being in a location in the cultural center of the Berkshires balances harmoniously with the natural beauty of it’s 550 acres and adjacent wildlife preserve. It has been the site of many wonderful memories for generations. It had fallen into deep disrepair until its sale in early 2010. The new owners have begun an extensive program of restoration that starts below ground and continues all the way to the highest rooftop.
In order to achieve modern building code requirements, the resort is undergoing a miraculous restoration stretching into the 3rd year now literally from the ground up. Many of these requirements have been technically surpassed to support a long term vision. All manner of infrastructure has received heavy reinvestment or complete replacement. New sewer lines, new drainage lines, new water lines, new water treatment, and new power systems thread throughout the entire property.
All buildings are being retrofitted with structural renovations. These begin with extensive roofing repairs, weather sealing, insulation updates, fire safety retrofits, new heating systems and energy management retrofits. Both the kitchen in the Mansion and the short order kitchen in Tally Ho Hall have been completely gutted and updated with modern commercial appliances, venting, fire suppression and massive grease capture systems.
The grounds are also undergoing extensive aesthetic and energy initiatives. Former sewage contamination will be mitigated by a state of the art waste treatment facility. Micro-wind turbines and distributed photo-voltaic panels help provide self-sufficient lighting. Eastover will continue to push Green Initiatives to achieve harmony with its natural surroundings.
And with this bold new effort will be a continued dedication to preserving nature and the beauty of the grounds. Your visit will leave you baffled as to how such a place can exist so close to the cultural center of the Berkshires.
