John Montgomary is the developer of Homeostasis Psychology, a new framework that is both a unifying model of human behavior and also a powerful new system of therapy and healing. John’s highest goal in this work is to synthesize cutting-edge neuroscience, biology, and psychology with various Eastern and Western spiritual traditions to create a new type of spirituality for the 21st Century – one that effectively integrates modern science with ancient and timeless spiritual wisdom. John received his Ph.D. in neuroscience from Caltech in Pasadena, California, and his B.A. in molecular genetics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He is the primary author of two books, and has written many professional articles as well as articles for publications such as Psychology Today, the Washington Post, and the Economist. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at New York University and uses the Homeostasis Psychology method in private practice in New York City.
Homeostasis Psychology proposes that as we live our modern lives, we typically alternate between two opposing forces or internal 'drives': a destructive 'addictive' drive that sabotages our goals and creates unnecessary pain and emotional distress; and the healthy 'homeostatic' drive, a guiding force within us that is always trying to move us into states of peace, well-being, vitality, and true aliveness, and to lead us on a path of growth and fulfillment.
The destructive addictive drive arises because, under the typical circumstances of modern life, we are all highly prone – perhaps surprisingly – to begin deriving unconscious biochemical rewards in our brains from distressing emotional states such as anxiety, anger, regret, and self-pity. These unconscious rewards can generate true biochemical addictions to these painful emotions, reinforcing the thought and behavior patterns that repeatedly generate these destructive states. The addictive drive, much like a thought and behavior 'parasite,' can begin to effectively colonize our brains and bodies, and appears to be directly responsible for the great majority of the psychological and physical illnesses that people suffer in modern life.
The homeostatic drive, on the other hand, is the natural biological force within us that actively promotes health and healing. Homeostasis Psychology further proposes, moreover, that the homeostatic drive is also a ‘spiritual’ force of enormous power: the force of all love and self-love; the force that allows us to connect to the Tao, or to the ‘flow’ of life; and the force or phenomenon that people have experienced as ‘God’. The Homeostasis Psychology healing method provides powerful insights, techniques, and tools that allow people to systematically disengage from the destructive addictive drive and connect to the healthy and ultimately transcendent homeostatic drive. The method thus presents a new path to spiritual enlightenment that is fully consistent with modern biology, evolution, and neuroscience – a spiritual path for the 21st Century.
