Expert Tai Chi instructor and Qigong Master Instructor Terry Dunn is giving a total of 13 days of intensive workshops in October 2019 at Eastover Estate: the first Tai Chi For Health workshop October 4 – 8 will be prepare students for his teacher Grandmaster William C.C. Chen’s week-long Tai Chi intensive October 11th – 15th; the second five-day workshop from October 16 to 20 will provide immersive follow-up training in Tai Chi Form, Push-Hands, and Tai Chi Sword that will build upon and refine the preceding five days of lessons given by Grandmaster Chen. The third workshop (October 24-27) will be a 3 day, all- Flying Phoenix Qigong workshop, Master Dunn’s most popular Qigong course that he has been teaching since 1997. Thus Tai Chi and Qigong enthusiasts—beginners and advanced players alike– will have the option to take five, ten, fifteen, or eighteen days instruction from Grandmaster Chen, Terry Dunn or both.

Workshop No.1: Tai Chi For Health (5 days) October 4 to 8
(starts Friday night; ends Tuesday 6pm)

In this 5-day, 35-hour immersive workshop, Terry Dunn will provide students of all levels with expert, step-by-step instruction in the 60-posture Yang Style Tai Chi Short Form created by his teacher, Grandmaster William C.C. Chen. To accelerate the learning and refinement of your Tai Chi form, you will be exposed to a wide repertoire of easy-to-do classical Tai Chi warm-up and conditioning exercises that Terry has distilled and developed over the past 44 years of his martial arts career from several traditions. This includes: (a) classical Yang Style exercises; (b) Silk-Weaver’s Exercise; (c ) Qing Dynasty Imperial Guard Exercises; (d) select of the “Silk-reeling” (chan su jin) exercises of Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan.

In addition to 5 hours of Form practice a day, you will also learn the basics of Push- Hands (Tui-shou) practice for 2 hours each day. Push-hands is the fun and collaborative laboratory for learning the martial applications of Tai Chi Chuan’s “soft power” and applying Tai Chi principles to everyday life.

This workshop is appropriate for students of all levels of Tai Chi experience–from absolute beginners to intermediate and advanced students who have Tai Chi forms under their belt and are skilled at Push Hands. Its primary purpose is to help students at all levels gain proficiency in the 60-posture Short Form and to improve their Push- Hands skills in order to enjoy more of Tai Chi’s great health benefits, and also, if they choose to stay on, to give them a solid foundation in order to derive maximum benefit from Grandmaster William Chen’s teachings during his workshop that follows immediately (October 11 through 15). Terry Dunn is also very well-versed in the traditional 108-posture Yang style Long Form and the Cheng Man-Ching 37-posture form, both of which he learned starting in 1980. If you have experience in these or other Yang Tai Chi forms, Terry will get you versed in GM William Chen’s 60-posture form in no time.

Terry Dunn’s teacher, Grandmaster William C.C. Chen is a senior student of the great Chinese Renaissance genius Professor Cheng Man-Ching (1902 – 1975), a master of the “Five Excellences”–painting poetry, calligraphy, herbal medicine and boxing (Tai Chi).  This is the Professor’s resonating Taoist philosophy that is activated by the practice of his style of Tai Chi Chuan that you will learn at this workshop:

Terry Dunn has 43 years of experience in Chinese martial, yogic and healing arts and is a certified master instructor in Taoist Elixir Method (Tao Tan Pai) Kung Fu and Neikung, Southern Shaolin Five Animals Kung Fu,  Ehrmei Mountain Bok Fu Pai Kung Fu, and the rare Eight Sections of Energy Combined Kung Fu.  He is also the sole seventh generation preserver in the world of Flying Phoenix Celestial Healing Chi Kung (“Fei Feng San Gong”) created by Taoist monk Feng Dao Deh in 1644 at Ehrmeishan.

Terry is an advanced practitioner of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan in the lineage of Prof. Cheng Man-ching since 1980.  For the past six years, he has been the student of Grandmaster William C.C. Chen.  He had previously studied from the late Master Abraham Liu from 1980 to 1992.  In 1989, he produced two 2-hour video programs, Tai Chi For Health Long Form (108) and Tai Chi For Health Short Form (37), which today after 29 years are still the most successful and top-selling instructional Tai Chi DVD programs in the English language.  *Beginning students coming to the workshops are urged to get either TCFH title and practice the 45-minute “Warm-up and Basic Postures” module at the beginning of the program, which has been lauded by Tai Chi masters from several traditions outside of the Yang style.

Testimonials

Terry Dunn is the creator of Tai Chi For Health Short Form & TCFH Long Form DVDs, the all-time best-selling Tai Chi instructional videos in the English language since 1991. Hundreds of 5-star reviews reflect the quality of Terry’s instruction at the time when he produced these programs–1989(!):

Best T’ai Chi Instructional Video

July 3, 2013
Terry Dunn does an excellent job of presenting T’ai Chi. His voice and his manner are very pleasant – super important for a presentation you are going to view again and again. The DVD offers choices. You can choose step by step analysis of the postures or a flowing presentation once you have enough skill to follow the full Short Form. The Short Form is plenty long enough for anyone who is not a monk in a monastery. The DVD includes a series of warm-up exercises. The interesting thing about T’ai Chi is one gains the most benefit by performing very slowly. It does wonders for proper breathing, relieving tension, relaxing the body and achieving balance (physically, emotionally and mentally). Western civilization seems to wind us tighter and tighter, The East recognizes the need for balance – the right balance of Yin and Yang. If the only thing you use this DVD.for is the warm-up exercise portion and a few of the steps of the Short Form, you would still get your money’s worth. When correcting your breathing, try letting your shoulders relax.

Strongly Recommend Terence Dunn’s Tai Chi Videos (both the long and short forms)

June 4, 2014
Format: DVDVerified Purchase

I have been a student of Tai Chi for aver 15 years and an instructor for 10 of those years. When asked if I know any good videos showing the Yang family forms I never fail to suggest Terence Dunn’s videos. These are old videos of Mr. Dunn in his youth (maybe late 20s – early 30s) and Mr. Dunn is now my age I would guess (60+). I always caution the people that I recommend Terry’s videos to, not to try too hard to emulate Terry strength and flexibility that they see in the videos. I caution that Terry’s form is an ideal to strive toward but is the best example of each movement explained clearly, slowly and (what I like most about his videos) showing views from the front and back of the movement simultaneously. His videos are a great aid and supplement to actual instructor lessons and offer a chance to see some of the finer points often missed while following the group exercise.

The best video teacher of Tai-Chi

February 3, 2011

I have owned and watched about ten Tai-Chi videos and this series by Terrence Dunn if by far the best to get started. I recommend everyone that asks me about Tai-Chi to watch any of the Terrence Dunn videos first. His teaching style really expresses each stance and he shows each of the movements slowly. I wish he would have a simplified 24 (Beijing 24) form video though as everyone I know that has taken classes usually is taught that at first, so I had to switch from learning his short form(49 or 49 positions) to learn the ’24’ first. Now that I am into Tai-Chi and learned the ’24’ I want to further my study into the longer Yang (108) forms, so I would have liked to see a simplified 24 video from him first. All in all, though, a great video teacher!! Thank you Terrence if you ever read this!

Superb

January 12, 2005

Tai Chi is one of those art forms that in the end requires a teacher, but this DVD is a superb presentation of the Yang Short Form. With two full presentations of the moves, I found the ‘multi-camera angle moves presentation that loop’ to be a phenomenal way to understand the complexities of each posture and move. The production features this looping area where each transition point is presented in a fashion that allows you to study it until you’re ready to move on. I feel like now, if I take a class, I’ll be yards ahead of everyone else. SImply fantastic. That you, Terrence Dunn.

EXCELLENT WORK, TERRY!

October 18, 2002

This video gives philosophy, history, warm-ups, basic postures and then goes through the instruction of the form step by step. Terry goes through this process properly and masterfully. Any person with some background in Tai Chi will have no problem understanding this tape. Such a person will also know how to implement other Tai Chi concepts that the tape does not obviously bring out but which Terry aludes to. What this means however is that the total beginner will have a challenge grasping some of the unseen fundamentals that can’t be taught on any tape, but which Terry has applied throughout the tape…

The Best Ta’i Chi Course

January 17, 2019

If you are interested in learning the Yang short form, you have probably looked at Youtube examples or tried other CD’s; I sure did. THIS one with Terence Dunn is far superior to any other I have ever seen, or any course I have taken. If you follow this throughout, you will have your best opportunity to really learn and understand the moves and the form, as well as information and philosophy.

Breast Cancer Survivor – part of my treatment for pain

October 20, 2016

I am a complete responder to chemo – and cancer survivor going through breast cancer treatment including total mastectomy with reconstruction. Recently I had severe back pain that put me in ER twice in a week. I switched my primary caregiver to a DO who referred me to a pain doctor who recommended this DVD among other things to build up my core. Along with labs and diet to monitor my calcium and other things. Right now I do just the warm up. I could feel the energy flowing better first time I did it and my body thanking me for the tune-up. I studied American Karate before and earned my black belt. Now perhaps Tai Chi. Easy to follow, simple explanations

Best Tai Chi video

December 20, 1999

This tape allow you to learn Tai Chi without a live teacher. I really like it. I have learned the complete Yang short formsof Tai Chi within a week. I have been swimming for 20+ years, jogging for10+ years, plus biking , hiking, …..

I used to think Tai Chi is too slow to give a good exercises. Now I think it is the best one to balance the mind and body.

***** Great Tai Chi DVD for beginner and advanced, May 7, 2007

By J. Jones (Tumwater, wa United States) –

Terry Dunn is a superb Tai Chi instructor. His DVD’s are easy to follow and highly motivating. The exercises are viewed from several angles so you can copy the move very affectively. The warm-up exercises are very helpful in preventing pulled muscles. Great for beginners and the more advanced.

***** Can there be a better Video on T’ai Chi Chuan than this one?, September 9, 1999

JESUISJR@AOL.COM (Bronx,NY) –

About fifteen years ago, I bought a book on T’ai Chi at a Flea Market for $1.00 and threw it in with my collection ,promising myself that I would read it sooner or later. Five years ago I began, finally, to scan through it and I decided, for supplemental assistance, to purchase a T’ai Chi for Health video tape that demonstrated 20 forms which I practiced daily for about two years until I felt that I was ready to advance. I then began to read the book which showed 108 forms and I was forewarned that it would take a considerable amount of time to learn the movements. So, using visual imagery and practicing with focused determination, I was able to work up to #108 after months and months and months of studying the book. I am aware that one is advised to work with a trained instructor in order to derive the maximum benefits from T’ai Chi but I did not want to allow the lack of an instructor to deter my motivation. Recently,I purchased the video tape, T’ai Chi for Health: Yang Long Form (By Terence Dunn) and after sitting and watching it for two hours, I felt that I was there with him being instructed one-on-one. I felt that Mr. Dunn’s demonstration of the forms was excellent and that his vocal instructions and explanations were direct, succinct, and informative. To my surprise, I found that I had been following correct procedure, for the most part, and that I had only to smooth out some edges in order to present a reasonable picture of appearing to know what I was doing. From my perspective, this VHS Tape fulfills much in the quest of many who seek to be rooted through the art of T’ai Chi Chuan; it is a tremendous tool for the neophyte.

*****Excellent, March 13, 2005

Reviewer: J. Hurlow (Memphis) –

I purchased this, with much trepidation, based on one person’s 5 star review BUT indeed this is a wonderful video. The music is very appropriate and peaceful, the instruction is clear enough for beginners but the instructor’s expertise is clear and will provide learning for many, many hours to come, and the instructor is wonderful, no silly jokes that will get annoying, very to the point yet not dry, seems very genuine. I am very pleased.

*****Energy, flexibility and balance, February 5, 2000

This tape was my first experience with Tai Chi, and I was truly amazed that within 48 hours I noticed a difference in breathing, posture and comfort – no more stiff backs in the morning. Terrence Dunn is an excellent teacher, soothing and smooth, but clear in all his instructions. It is easy to get confused by the right/left instructions – if you are facing the TV, you must always move in the opposite direction and that is hard at first. I highly recommend this video, but be careful if you are not in shape – the warm-up alone is enough for the first few sessions.
