Introduction to Ba Gua Zhang with Fukui Yang and Rick Barrett

May 11, 2018 - May 13, 2018

Baguazhang (Pakua Chang) is an exquisitely beautiful and powerfully effective Chinese internal martial art. Bagua emphasizes spiral movements, graceful footwork, and whole-body energetic connection. Regular practice develops grace, flexibility, agility, and internal power while also cultivating a calm, focused mind while engaged in vigorous activity.

The spiraling energies of baguazhang are unique and are an effective complement to the other two principle Chinese internal martial arts, taijiquan and xingyiquan. It relies on open hand techniques rather than fists, and uses spinning, turning, and change of direction to evade and misdirect rather than clash with an adversary. It is said that it was designed to fight up to eight opponents at a time.

Bagua derives its name from the “Eight Trigrams” of the Daoist classic, Yijing (I Ching, or Book of Changes). Few teachers are as able to impart its mysteries quite so effectively as Master Yang Fukui. He joyfully shares his deep understanding of Chinese martial arts, medicine, and philosophy, learned initially from his grandfather and great-granduncle and continued throughout a life of exploration and study.

This seminar takes it back to basics, from body mechanics to energy cultivation to moving meditation. It is open to all levels and will provide a good foundation for continued study as well as solo practice.

Teacher

Master Fukui Yang

Master Fukui Yang was born in December 1958 in Hebei province to a family of Chinese Martial Arts tradition. Like many Chinese martial arts families, Master Yang’s family has a deep Chinese medicinal tradition, which can be traced back to the same roots as Chinese Martial Arts. He learned Chinese Medicine Meridian Theory from his family and took courses in schools. It deepened Master Yang’s understanding of Chinese Martial Arts, and at the same time it empowered him to cure sports injuries and illnesses using physical therapy, bone setting, Acupuncture, and Qi Gong methods.

In 1978, Master Yang was admitted to the Department of Martial Arts of the Tianjin Institute of Physical Education. There, he not only enhanced his martial arts skills, but also systematically studied Martial Arts Theory, Physiology, Anatomy, and Psychology.

At the All China Physical Education Colleges Martial Arts Competition in Lanzhou of 1980, Master Yang won championships for Staff, Broad Sword, and Ditang Quan. In 1982, he was the champion of the Taiji Push Hands Competition in Shandong Province.

Master Yang currently teaches Chinese Medicine at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine as well as Taiji Quan and Qi Gong at the Confucius Institute at SUNY College of Optometry.

Rick Barrett

Rick Barrett has been teaching Chinese internal martial arts and practicing energy healing in New York City for over a quarter century, and has been studying for almost forty years. His two primary teachers are William C. C. Chen and Yang Fukui.

Rick’s investigations into the martial side of taijiquan led to several national championships in taiji Push Hands and to develop what he calls “Love-based Martial Arts.” He demonstrates clearly how the martial artist is empowered by love and hindered by fear and anger.

Rick is the founder ofTai Chi Alchemy and has published two books,Taijiquan: Through the Western GateandFinding You in a World of It.Influenced by Martin Buber’sI and Thou, the integral philosophy of Ken Wilber, and the research of cell biologist James Oschman, Rick has developed an effective way to quickly and dependably access energetic coherence, heightened states of consciousness, and authentic engagement and to integrate that and more into the lived life.
